Powder metallurgy techniques are so flexible and enables various technical means. All known metals and also their mixtures or alloys can be prepared for the production of the part. As a result high, medium or low porous parts can be produced according to the needs. General applications are metal filters, porous bearings and structural parts for high strength applications.

In cases that high strength and load resistance are required the bearings are manufactured from iron based copper-steels. The bearings that are manufactured from metal powders acts as an oil storage which has a controlled porosity. The filters have the highest porosity and manufactured according to the applications or the required pore dimensions and pressures.

The tensile strength values of powder metal parts are generally between 150-450 N/mm² and the elongation values are between 2% and 5%. With this characteristics they can be compared with gray cast iron. But if needed a tensile strength of 1200 N/mm² and an elongation of 20% can also be achieved. Some mechanical properties of metals produced by P/M technology can be seen in Table 1.

Material Tensile Strength (N/mm²) Elongation (%)
Iron 100 - 276 15 - 2
Steel 130 - 490 3.5 - 0.5
Copper-Steel 140 - 614 7 - 0.5
Copper infiltrate steel 450 - 890 2.5 - 1.0
Heat treated alloyed steels 200 - 1200 10.5 - 1.5
Bronze 55 - 124 2.5 - 1.0
